Special Needs

Children who have difficulties in learning, are given extra help individually or in small groups.

Some children have speech and communication problems and they have small group sessions every week for specific sound work and speaking and listening skills.

For children who have co-ordination difficulties, we run a gym trail programme, which consists of twice weekly sessions concentrating on activities to improve balance and co-ordination.

Specialist advice is sought when necessary, from the advisory learning service, Speech and Occupational therapies and sometimes the Educational Psychologist. You will receive a permission slip before the visit and any information will be shared with you afterwards.

In the case of children who are gifted, classroom work is carefully planned to ensure they are fully stretched.

Some children need extra help for just a short time and we may suggest a Record of Support to address specific needs. These will be discussed with you at regular intervals.

Specialist Support Class (SSC)

We are fortunate to have the Key Stage 1 SSC, which serves the whole of the Felixstowe area. This is a ten-place unit for children with complex or moderate learning difficulties. Children in the SSC are part of the school and can join mainstream classes when appropriate but also benefit from working with a high proportion of experienced adult support. We are extremely proud of our SSC and welcome visits from interested parents and teachers from other schools.
